SOUND PROJECT

Monday, 5th February 2018

Designing

- I begin this project by looking at soundscapes, particularly the layering of sounds in horror games.

- I may continue with my previous prototype for the lights camera game.

- I may utilize the microphone and discover a game that reveals elements in the game relative to the level of noise the player makes.

- I continue to run into problems with unity on my computer, I begin working solely on the school computers.

- Aside from further developing my spooky soundscape and using samples to layer on one another, I haven’t been able to add them into my unity game

ROUGH PROTOTYPE DUE

- Notes: I previously emailed asking for an extension on the rough prototype, I begin to think I may change the game entirely/start from scratch. I show Pippin my soundscape and am to meet with the rough prototype on Friday.

Starting Anew

- Started from scratch/original Tanks tutorial.

- Began by deleting the level art, thus leaving the tanks to roam infinitely in 3D space.

- I discover trail rendering, a way to add paths to the tank projectiles.

- I create my own version of what a bomb drop sounds in reference to gaming.

- I like the infinite blackness surrounding the tanks, I find it striking, I add a glow to all the elements still left within the game (trail render, the tanks, the arrows.)

- I trigger the bomb drop sign every time a shell is fired and a path drawn.

- I change the camera to perspective view to better see the web of paths the tanks draw when firing.

Further Prototyping

- I use my last new prototype to form the basis of a second iteration of the prototype.

- This prototype introduces AI Tanks and changes the camera view to first person perspective.

- It’s more difficult to see the intricacies of the trail renders and it’s difficult to hit the AI tanks.

- I decided I prefer my first iteration more but am happy I had something to compare it to

- The first iteration is more effective due to the increased visibility of the tail maps and the potential for conceptual grounds within a two player game rather than one player game

More Conceptual Consideration

- I meet with Pippin to show him my new prototype

- He likes the appearance, sound effect and new direction.

- He says I should consider now the content and conceptual grounds of the piece, will it be a commentary on war/missiles? Will I make it a commentary on art stemming from weapons?

- I begin to consider how I might comment on modern warfare and introduce more layers of sound accordingly.

Research

- I begin to amass dialogue from news cast segments regarding missile, tanks, war and death.

- I edit each sound file to a small clip and begin thinking about how I might randomize the tone of the bomb sound and clip of the sound file to be played when fired.

- I start experimenting with trail render colours, I like the bright playful colours in contrast with the heavy subject matter in the news.

- I decide to meet with Pippin to ask about how I might randomize the tone and news clip.

Meet with Pippin

- I meet with Pippin and he shows me how one might go about randomizing the clip played from an array.

- He says to experiment with the background.

- At this point I can't use Unity on my computer and am finding this more and more frustrating.

Further Prototyping

- I redo what Pippin showed me on my version of the game and I play around with the background.

- I end up using an old map tracking of missile projections, I think it's odd that it's so colourful, but I am very pleased.

- I consider myself satisfied enough on this new prototype for Monday.

MY CAT THROWS UP ON MY HARD DRIVE

- I lose four years of work including my latest prototype and build of the tanks game.

I still show up to face the jury

- I wake up early and head to the labs in an attempt to redo all my work or possibly find a previous wetransfer version that's still salvagable.

- I'm depressed and have to show a class of foreign students a pitiful version of what my previous prototype once was. I Somehow managed not to lose all the sound files through a lucky WeTranfer.

- Surprisingly enough some people seem to still like the semi-game and tell me they like the concept.

- Pippin says he will extend my deadline do to the extreme circumstances and I turn a revised prototype in to him at a later time in slightly better condition.
